The Ashe County Inspection Department is set up to Inspect Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Fire to insure the compliance with the North Carolina Building Codes. This is to insure the Public safety, Health, and General welfare by providing for the administration and enforcement of the N.C. Code.
A building permit is required by the State of North Carolina and must be obtained prior to the construction, reconstruction, alteration, repair, movement to another site, or demolition of any building, or prior to the installation, extension, or repair of any plumbing, mechanical, or electrical system. In some cases, exemptions from requirements for building permits are applicable, and the Building Inspections Department should be contacted to determine if a project is exempt. The statutes that govern building permits and any exceptions can be found under North Carolina General Statute 160A-417.
Approval from other agencies may be required before a building permit can be issued, including but not limited to: floodplain, town zoning, and Environmental Health compliance. (No structures can go in the floodway). Engineering, surveying, and elevation certificates may also be required.
Please call the Building Inspections Department at (336) 846-5511 with any questions.
